The UAE Market: Egypt’s Golden Gateway for Global Food Exports
In a scene reflecting deep economic ties and strategic cooperation, the United Arab Emirates stands out as one of the most important and dynamic destinations for Egyptian food exports. It serves not merely as a massive consumer market, but as a global logistical hub and a gateway to international markets. This positions the UAE market at the forefront of priorities for relevant Egyptian authorities and food industry exporters alike.
Notable Export Performance and Sustainable Growth
Egypt’s food exports to the UAE tell a story of ascending success. Exports to the UAE surged during the first 11 months of 2025, reaching $215 million, marking a 22% growth compared to the same period in 2024. This growth is no coincidence; it is the result of increasing and stable demand driven by the quality and competitiveness of Egyptian products, as well as the distinguished bilateral relations that help overcome many obstacles.
The diversity and vitality of the Egyptian export basket are evident in the record growth rates of specific products. From January to November 2024, cocoa preparations achieved an astonishing growth of 1,840%, followed by cereal preparations and biscuits at 190%, and prepared/preserved olives at 143%. Frozen strawberries also saw a growth of 111%, while exports of flour and processed potatoes rose by 103% and 110%, respectively.
Frozen potatoes topped the list of Egyptian food commodities exported to the UAE in 2024, accounting for 16% of total exports. They were followed by flavoring mixtures and concentrates for soft drinks (15%), and then chocolate (11%). This confirms that Egyptian exports are no longer limited to traditional products but extend to high-value-added goods.
Supportive Events and Bridges: Gulfood as a Model
Participation in international exhibitions, foremost among them “Gulfood Dubai,” is a cornerstone of the strategy to penetrate the Emirati and global markets. Egypt is participating in the current edition of Gulfood with its largest-ever contingent of specialized food industry companies, comprising over 170 firms, reflecting the sector’s renewed confidence and expansionist ambition.

Relevant Egyptian entities, such as the Food Export Council (FEC), the General Authority for Exhibitions and Conferences, and the Trade Representation, have not left matters to chance. The FEC operates according to a comprehensive action plan that includes organizing specialized training programs to qualify companies for expansion into Arab and Gulf markets, intensive workshops on food safety requirements for exporting to Dubai in cooperation with the National Food Safety Authority (NFSA), and training programs on export logistics management and successful export mechanisms, all aimed at maximizing returns from participation in these global events.
Smart Regulatory System: A Guarantee of Quality and Speedy Procedures
Engineer Ahmed Abouraya, Head of the Sector, revealed during a seminar organized by the FEC one of the key factors making the UAE market attractive to exporters: the advanced and transparent regulatory system managed by Dubai Municipality, represented by the Food Safety Department. This system operates through an integrated smart platform based on Artificial Intelligence and data analytics, called the Import Release System (IRS).
This system fully electronically links all government regulatory bodies (such as Customs, DP World, and shipping companies), allowing for instant data exchange and verification of health certificates. It automatically analyzes the risk level of each shipment based on supplier data, country of origin, and past history to determine the type of inspection required (documentary, direct, or physical).
This system has significantly reduced cargo clearance time to just one or two hours, or even seconds in some cases, while maintaining the highest safety standards. It also helps curb unsafe food handling through the use of advanced inspection devices such as rapid pesticide testers and remote thermal scanners, eliminating the need to open containers.
Challenges and Future Opportunities
At the same seminar, Minister Plenipotentiary Manal Abdel Tawab, Head of the Egyptian Trade Office in Dubai, stated, “Despite the honorable performance, immense opportunities remain untapped, which Egyptian companies should capitalize on.”
She added, “The most prominent challenge remains enhancing ‘institutional professionalism in communication’ with the Emirati side, particularly regarding precise technical and veterinary requirements for products of animal origin—a hurdle not limited to the UAE but common to European markets in general.”
On another front, the counterfeiting of Egyptian trademarks abroad poses a threat to the reputation of the national industry, necessitating decisive intervention from Egyptian regulatory bodies to protect intellectual property rights and support serious exporters.
The UAE market is not merely an export destination for Egyptian food products; it is a strategic partner in the journey of global expansion. The political and economic stability of the UAE, the development of its logistical infrastructure, the presence of a large Egyptian community, and its effective and transparent regulatory system all combine to make it an ideal platform for launching Egyptian products towards broader horizons.
The number of shipments reached 8,680 in 2024, with exported items diversifying to 27,547 varieties. This rise in both shipment numbers and product diversity sends a reassuring message to the sector and points to a promising future, especially with the continued coordination efforts between the Egyptian and Emirati sides, the adoption of global quality standards by Egyptian companies, and the transformation of technical challenges into opportunities for improvement and innovation.
